Sometimes a crime is so depraved that it makes you wonder how the person who committed it is even human. Though that's true in Brian Varela's case, his story is still simply unbelievable.
Brian Varela told police that he had known 18-year-old Alyssa Mae Noceda for a few years and had been communicating with her on Snapchat. Alyssa had recently broken up with her boyfriend and decided to go over to Varela's house on Saturday night to hang out and party.
According to the police report, Varela was known to use and sell drugs, including marijuana, acid, cocaine, and Percocet pills. Varela said that after Alyssa crushed up and snorted a "large line of Percs" (painkillers), he then gave her a "dab" of liquid THC. Alyssa immediately collapsed and fell unconscious.
Instead of calling for help, Varela took several pictures showing Alyssa unconscious and naked on his bed. Her lips were swollen and blue. He then proceeded to text the pictures to several of his friends in a group chat. "LOL I think she OD'd, still breathing," the text read. "I'm smashing her to pass the time."
After raping her, Varela told his friends that he thought Alyssa was still breathing and considered taking her to a hospital, but that he was "too tired to do so" and went to bed. Sunday morning, according to Varela's roommate, he stepped out of his room and said he needed some help.
Varela proceeded to show his roommate and another person Alyssa's body, which the roommate described as being stiff with foam around her lips. The roommate said he told Varela to call the police. Instead, he closed and locked his door and left to work a double shift at a local Dairy Queen.
During his shift, Varela bragged to his coworkers about the party and raping Alyssa. One coworker told police that Varela described how he’d stuffed her body into a plastic crate, breaking her legs to make it fit. Varela told him he was going to fill the crate with onions to hide the smell before burying it.
After hearing this, the coworker did a Facebook search early Tuesday. He discovered a post by Alyssa's mother that said her daughter had been missing since Saturday night. He alerted authorities to what Valera had told him. Police converged on Valera's home two hours later where they found the suspect and Alyssa's body stuffed into a crate in his bedroom.
Valera told police that he had researched on his phone how to dispose of a body. He also told them that after reading the Facebook post from Alyssa's mother on Monday that he had used her dead thumb to unlock her phone. He then updated her Snapchat with the intention of making it look like she'd run away.
Before arresting Valera, police spoke with his mother, who said that she had kicked him out of her home because of drugs and his "gangster lifestyle." He was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, homicide by controlled substance, and second-degree rape. Prosecutors have charged the 19-year-old with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree rape, and controlled substance homicide.
Deputy prosecutor Bob Hendrix said the allegations involving Varela show “a callous and shocking disregard for human life.” Judge Tam Bui found probable cause to hold him in jail. She set bail at $500,000. Alyssa's mother was present for the hearing. Afterward, she said, “I want to know why. She didn’t deserve it. Nobody deserves anything that bad.”
